2014-05-30 07:47 - Important Announcements Concerning All Mendel Alumni
Posted by fhayzebmore from same (Monarch News)
Monarch News                            ONE MENDEL-ALL ERAS

At the Mendel Foundation’s October 24, 2013 Board of Directors meeting, the Board unanimously authorized that a formal invitation be extended to the Alumni Association headed by Jack Vlazny, and it’s HOF Selection Committee headed by Bob Napoli, to merge with the Foundation to create “One Mendel.” On Wednesday, after months of talking about how to make this idea a reality, Bob and Jack formally accepted that invitation, and are now members of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. This is truly a merger of equals in every way that finally makes “One Mendel, All Eras—Monarchs United as Brothers” a reality. Now the structure is in place to begin to move forward in unison. In the months ahead links between the web sites will be created, and the Hall of Fame will be migrated to a Virtual Hall for all Alumni and their families to enjoy.

Both the Alumni Association, and it’s HOF Selection Committee, will continue to operate as independent parts of the Foundation, but will soon enjoy our tax-exempt status. They will continue to do all of the things, and host all of the events, that they have in the past, and will continue to be inclusive of Alumni from all eras, as has long been Bob and Jack’s expressed desires and commitment. The new Foundation Board will be appointed in December, and ALL Alumni from ALL eras are invited to submit their resumes/cv’s/bio’s to me at fhayzeb@aol.com ASAP if they are interested and committed. (All who have been involved in the Leadership of the organizations and their committees will continue in their roles within the AA, Foundation & HOF Selection Committee).

Our plan is to expand our purpose beyond awarding scholarships to students at Augustinian High Schools in Illinois, to include other charitable purposes such as assisting the Augustinians, as the Alumni Association and former Men of Tolentine organization had done. (Most of us strongly supported that effort in the past, irrespective of organizational affiliations). The social aspects of the Alumni Association with continue under Jack’s leadership, with his current leadership team.

Congratulations to Jack Vlazny & Bob Napoli, for bringing everyone together under one Mendel umbrella

2011-11-08 14:04 - Looking for films from the 1980's Help !
Posted by RonDubinmore from same (Monarch News)
Monarch NewsA journalist based in New York is working on an ESPN Films documentary about 1980s Chicago basketball star Ben Wilson.  Wilson went to Simeon H.S. and was tragically killed in November 1984 the day before his senior season began; the outpouring of grief city-wide was unprecedented.  Here is were we can help because many of Wilson's friends told us in interviews about how they used to go to Mendel for parties and dances in the early 1980s.  And according to them, these events were filmed.  I would love to find this somehow, and I figured that the Mendel Alumni Association might be able to help.  Anyone out there know about the filming and where we can find them?

2010-09-14 08:20 - EVENT COMING Sunday sept 19
Posted by RonDubinmore from same (Monarch News)
Monarch News
You may have heard some talk about a Podcast coming up at the End Zone Tap on 10034 S. Western Avenue on September 19, 7:00 til 9:00. This will be dedicated to celebrating Mendel's 68 City Champ football team, but all the guys and gals and their friends and family are welcome, no admission. I want a good contingent of Cavanagh, Combes, Hinsberger, Zackey, Klausner, Brantley, Flaherty and Daly family reps, if you can. I'd ask the guys who couldn't make the Soldier Field ceremony in 2008 to try hard to make it- especially Rich Wyatt, George Feehan, Jim Angio, (the Sox play Sunday afternoon) & Pat Schreiber. Special guest: John Gener, courtesy of the Federal Protective Service for the Southern District of California, San Diego.

I'm hoping to arrange call ins from some of our out of towners who can't fly in.

It's basically a night at a Chicago neighborhood bar with lots of old friends. You don't have to be on the radio if you don't want to. There will be lots of us not drinking.

Everyone is welcome, no rope line or cover. Just a guaranteed good time.

2010-04-15 17:38 - Rodney Chambers Class of 1986
Posted by jpf1968more from same (Monarch News)
Monarch NewsRodney is the Track Coach at Fenwick High School. He was truly a star track and cross-country athlete at Mendel. He is currently facing some health issues, and all Monarchs are requested to send a few prayers and good thoughts his way.

If you were on a track or cross-country team, you know how hard you worked and the recognition was a bit thin. I think a note to Rodney from former track/cross-country athletes in care of Fenwick High School 505 Washington Boulevard
Oak Park, IL 60302-4095 would be a nice idea.

Rodney coaches Martin Grady, son of John Grady Mendel Class of 70?), nephew of Tom Grady (68), Joe Grady (64) and Bob Grady(66) (RIP). A real Monarch Family !

Monarch News"We have about 200 wood slats from the original Mendel gym floor that will be ready for Mendel alumni who would like a piece of the gym floor for their memories. The original gym floor was made of wood slats and we are pulling all the nails out of the slats. They will be ready in October for alumni who would like a piece of the gym floor. A large piece is being prepared to place in the Mendel Hall of Fame.

We have about 200 bricks from the Mendel gym and about 200 from the Mendel Monastery. They are very old bricks but held up good throughout the years. They are being cleaned and will be ready for any alumni that would like a memorial brick from the gym or monsastery in October. Bricks from the gym and monastery will also be placed in the Mendel Hall of Fame cabinets.

If you are interested in getting a piece of the gym floor or memorial bricks please contact Tony Johnson, Class of 1979 at mendelalumni@comcast.net so that your name can be added to the list of those who would like a personal piece of our history for themselves"

2008-03-05 07:40 - From Jim Burke '69
Posted by RonDubinmore from same (Monarch News)
Monarch News        Info provided by Don Goeppner for Jim Burke.
I was the Deputy Project Manager for Operations for two years, providing leadership, training, planning and oversight for 62 locations throughout the country of Iraq.  Stationed in Balad and Baghdad, I flew nightly to locations where we provided food, water, fuel, maintenance and logistics warehouse and transportation directly to the US and Coalition forces in Iraq.  When the Surge began, I returned home to recover from the nightly shelling of mortars and rocket fire by the non-Iraqi Insurgents.

I am returning in a new role, with a different contractor, and will be managing the scheduling and planning for the establishment of the National Depot for the Iraq Army.  We will be working side-by-side local Iraqi citizens who are just trying to provide a living for their families.  Ask my fellow Monarchs to pray for us.  This was dangerous before, this kind of proximity tests the thin line between courage and foolish.  I am representing you all after completing my 20 year career as a Logistics Officer and Medical Evacuation Pilot.  I feel the work is important, necessary and only for those who have considerable experience in the military and in the civilian sector.

May you all enjoy a splendid and happy day, remember that we are gentlemen...and God Bless the USA!

Kind regards,

Jim Burke '69

Posted by SteveBmore from same (Monarch News)
Monarch NewsFr. Jack is recovering at Weiss Memorial in Chicago.  He had his knee repaired from a prior knee surgery.  His bother reports that Fr. Jack is doing well and that the Doctor said if her were 50 hwe would be up and walking already,  I'm sure he would appreciate any visitors from the Chicago area that he taught at Mendel.  He was my good friend here in St. Louis while principal at Augustinian Academy and pastor at Immaculate Conception Parish.

Posted by RonDubinmore from same (Monarch News)
Monarch NewsThe July 2004  revision of the alumni list is now online. An updated list be be available before end of March 2006.
For convenience purposes you may prefer to download a copy and import the data into your own spreadsheet or database.  Browsing the almost 5000 records on the website can be time consuming.
Please let others know about the site; we still need to get info on 3200 "missing" alumni and another 699 that I have bad mailing or email addresses. HELP!
