In response to an inquiry with the Augustinas of the Midwest, Brother Thomas Taylor, O.S.A.wrote:
Father Robert Versteynen died March 13, 2004. He had been ill for a long time prior to his death.
He had left the Augustinian Order in 1970, but was a priest in good standing, affiliated to the Diocese of Rockford, Illinois, from 1970 until the time of his death.
I never met Father Versteynen, but did have the occasion to speak with him on the telephone a few times during his final illness. He came across to me as a good man.
A cousin of Father Verstynen's, Mildred Lofgren furnished the following information:
Father Verstynen attended St. Thomas High School in Rockford, Illinois. Upon graduation in 1939, he entered Loras College where he was active in both basketball and tennis. In 1944, he entered and advaced program at Villanova University. He was ordained an Augustinan priest in June of 1947.
Father Verstynen served as Dean of Studies at Mendel Catholic High School during the early 1960's. He later was transferred to Saint Rita.
in 1970, he relocated to Rockford and became an educator at Rockford College. His last days were spent at St. Ann's parish in Rockford.
