2011-04-06 08:54 - docjawbreaker | In 1958 my geometry teacher, Mr. Joe Magee (head football coach), told our class that the guys on the football team routinely used audibles. They were simple ones such as "BLUE" meant a pass and "GREEN" meant a run since the sky was blue and grass was green. However, the offensive line on that team had extremely high I.Q.'s and probably could do much more if asked. I also recall hearing that the pro football team, the Chicago Cardinals, visited Mendel to learn how to teach their players audibles. I don't believe they had much luck considering they were perennial losers.

2006-03-30 10:58 - TheLittlestMonarch | Thanks TomCleary for the great archives.........THE only two results that count show that the 68 Mendel Offense scored the seventh highest point total out of seventy championship games, not too shabby. I also believe that back in the early nineties the Sun Times voted the 68 Monarchs as one of the top five all time great high school teams to ever play in Chicago. It is a well known fact that the 57 Mendel Championship Teams last second win by 6 was by far the most exciting ending to any football game ever played (Co-Captain Mike Woulfe made three seperate blocks on the play / may God keep his soul close to him). Only Mendel fans from the early era know that the 1957 squad, though their margin of victory in most of their games was fairly close, they literally beat the crap out of EVERY oponent they faced (read Steve Szabo article 11-15-05). They were THE toughest group of players ever assembled under the great coaching of legend Joe Magee. Thanks to both of these teams for putting our beloved Mendel on the board in Chicago football history! |
